How to fix a cracked, scratched or broken smartphone screen without taking it into a repair shop

These DIY tips will help you to repair your phone’s display — if you’re brave enough to try them out
But you don’t necessarily have to go to a shop to fix your smartphone.
Simon Rockman, mobile expert and founder of Fuss Free Phones, told The Sun Onlinethat you can easily buy everything you need online.
“The difference between going to a shop and buying parts from eBay is huge: you can save yourself from forking out up to $A327 for a repair,” he said.
“You might need to buy special tools but a few dollars buys a full set of the things you’ll need and some sellers throw in replacement screens too.”
If you want to do a bit of DIY, just head to eBay and do a quick search for “repair kit” followed by the name of your phone.
But if that sounds a bit too straightforward for you, here are a few of the DIY remedies for the nightmare of a cracked screen circulating online — which you should only undertake at your own risk and with extreme scepticism.
Are you brave enough to try them out?
PLASTIC BAG
If your phone screen shatters, you can stop it getting worse by buying a screen protector.
But what if your finances are as broken as your mobile?
Just wrap a thin, transparent plastic bag around the mobile and it should temporarily stop the problem getting any worse.
TOOTHPASTE
This method can fix a small scratch, or at least hide it.
Put a tiny bit of toothpaste on a cotton bud and rub it on the scratch, making sure it doesn’t find its way into headphone sockets, buttons or other vulnerable parts of your device.
It will make your phone minty fresh, although it won’t restore it to mint condition.
A tube of toothpaste can save you money.
VEGETABLE OIL
Again, this will hide the problem but won’t entirely fix it.
Just rub a dab of oil onto the scratch to hide it.
But beware: the oil will rub off and will need to be reapplied.
SANDPAPER
This is a method that is not for the faint hearted.
If a small mark appears in your phone, you can try to sand it down with paper or even use a grinding machine.
But don’t sand too enthusiastically because you might not have a screen left.
BAKING SODA
A folk remedy circulating online suggests a paste made from two parts baking soda to one part water can fix screens.
Just make a thick paste and then use a cloth to rub it in.
This should cover up the problem for a while.

A tiny crack in a cellphone screen is not fatal to the LCD's integrity but it does distract the user. You can fill the crack in the screen with toothpaste to make it disappear. Common household supplies beyond the toothpaste will be needed, but no special tools.
Step1
Place a hand towel on a table. Place the cellphone on the towel with the screen facing up. Blow off the screen with a burst of compressed air. Wipe the edges of the screen with a soft cloth to remove any dust that has gathered there. Blow the screen off again with the compressed air.
Step2
Apply toothpaste to the end of the cotton swab. Wipe the excess toothpaste off the sides of the swab with your finger. Wash your finger with water.
Step3
Hold the swab in your right hand. Hold the cellphone down with your left hand. Place the covered tip of the swab against the screen at the left side of the crack. Press down gently as you drag the tip across the length of the crack. Remove the tip once the other side of the crack is reached. Discard the swab.
Step4
Wrap the soft cloth around the pinky finger of your right hand. Hold the cellphone down with your left hand. Place the covered tip of your pinky against the screen at the left side of the crack. Press down gently as you drag the covered tip of your pinky along the length of the crack. Remove your pinky from the screen once you reach the other side of the crack. Place the soft cloth aside.

Inspect the screen to see if the crack is no longer visible. If you can still see the crack, repeat the entire procedure again starting with the application of the toothpaste to the swab and the swab to the screen
